The
Arc's Programs
The Arc in Hawaii works to establish policies
and programs that include people with intellectual disabilities
in society. These programs improve quality of
life and help The Arc create supportive environments
that empower people with intellectual disabilities to
lead independent, self-determined lives.
The Arc:
• Highlights the abilities of people with
intellectual disabilities through work programs, such
as the annual Legislative
Intern Program
• Provides policymakers with a monthly
State
Capitol Report containing information on
issues facing people with intellectual disabilities
that may be useful in creating legislation
• Encourages individuals with intellectual disabilities
to form self-advocacy
clubs by providing training, accommodations
and mentorship
• Aids individuals and families needing
direct assistance in areas such as educational
services, transition planning, residential placement,
securing or protecting government benefits and
accessing services
• Trains
law enforcement officers in an effort to
protect the rights of people with intellectual disabilities
• Provides community-based day
services in Honolulu, Wahiawa, Pearl City
and Kaneohe
• Provides residential
services through 29 community homes and
apartment buildings on Oahu and Kauai
