How is The Arc funded?
The Arc is primarily funded through state and federal contracts, as well as through private donations, including the Aloha United Way and the Harry & Jeanette Weinberg Foundation. Back to top


What kind of training does The Arc staff receive?
All The Arc's staff are certified in:
• First Aid
• CPR

The Arc in Hawaii's DD/MR Curriculum Training, which includes the state of Hawaii's Visions certification program (40 hours of training).
All The Arc's staff receive at least an additional 20 hours of training annually. The Arc staff also receive training specific to the individuals they work with. Back to top


What volunteer opportunities does The Arc have?
Individuals or groups are welcome to volunteer with The Arc at any of The Arc's facilities. For more information, please call The Arc's administrative office at (808) 737-7995. Volunteers may be required to go through some orientation or training depending on the type of activity they will be engaged in. Back to top


What are the staff to client ratios?
Staff to client rations are determined by each individuals specific needs. A typical staff to client ratio is 1:3 for people in the IFC/MR-C program and 1:3 or 1:4 for those in the Home and Community-Based Services waiver program. Some individuals will receive 1:1 support from time to time. Back to top


Do The Arc's homes and apartments have a "home-like" environment?
As much as possible The Arc's staff tries to create a "family" environment to make the residents feel comfortable and at home. Back to top


Do the homes have visiting hours?
There are no set visiting hours, but they may be arranged as needed with the home managers. Back to top


How does The Arc monitor abuse and neglect? What measures does The Arc take when abuse and neglect occur?
All allegations of client abuse and neglect, as well as injuries are treated very seriously and reported by way of Incident Reports. Incidents are then reviewed and followed-up on by the relevant parties. This policy is implemented in conjunction with the Hawaii Revised Statutes on Adult Protective Services 346-221 to 346-253 and Chapter 350 Child Abuse. Back to top

How are individuals on psychotropic medications monitored for appropriate dosages?
Each individual's medications are monitored and varied according to his or her doctor's recommendations. Additionally, the case of any participant who is taking psychotropic medication is confidentially presented before The Arc's Human and Legal Rights Committee on a regular basis. This is done to ensure that the use of chemical restraints is not abused or without justification. Back to top

What is an intellectual disability?
An intellectual disability is a condition that occurs before a person is 18 years of age and leads the person to have significant sub-average intellectual functioning (IQ of 70–75 or less) and limitations in at least two of ten major life activities, e.g. communication, self-care and functional academics. By contrast, individuals with developmental disabilities are defined as having a mental or physical impairment that occurred between the ages of 5 and 22 which limits them in at least three of the seven major life activities.
