Since 1954, The Arc in Hawaii has been a force
in advocating for the welfare of people with mental
retardation. Through strong advocacy programs
at the national and local level, The Arc is committed
to helping people with mental retardation gain
the opportunity to choose where and how they live,
learn, work and play.
Your membership support enables The
Arc in Hawaii to:
• Advocate on the behalf of people with
mental retardation
• Make the public aware of the needs,
rights and abilities of people with mental retardation
• Offer guidance to those who need help
and those who want to help
• Develop and promote effective programs
and services
• Promote and apply research to enhance
independence
• Monitor local and national progress
in the areas of inclusion in education, employment,
community living and recreation
• Encourage progressive legislation
• Educate the public on the precautions
that can be taken to prevent mental retardation,
including fetal alcohol syndrome and alcohol-related
birth defects
• Provide day services in Honolulu, Wahiawa,
Pearl City and Kaneohe
• Provide residential services through
29 community homes and apartment buildings on
Oahu and Kauai
On the national level, The Arc has
been instrumental in:
• Increasing federal support for mental
retardation services and research
• Gaining Social Security coverage for
adults disabled in childhood
• Securing the right to public education
for all children
• Passage of the "Baby Doe"
amendments to the Child Abuse Act
• Enactment of The Fair Housing Act amendments
which prohibit housing discrimination based
on disability
